The checkbox mentality

In the three years I've been doing websites full-time for a living, I've come to a conclusion about a lot of the businesses I've dealt with. They're just checking off a box.

It amazes me how many folks have a rote conception of business and nothing else. Sure, you could be providing a service and doing things to promote that service to more customers. But, most businesses aren't even inclined to engage in the self-criticism it takes to make any of that useful.

In truth, they go shopping for a website to check off a box. Then they turn down the higher bidders, because they're not looking for service, value or purpose. They're just ticking off a check in the box next to "get a website". That way, they can torpedo the whole idea and throw the failure in the face of whoever suggested the idea in the first place.

These businesses make the same mistake in every medium. Sure, you shouldn't waste a nickel on radio advertising. But, you want to check off the box marked "spend on advertising". Never mind the ineffectiveness of said advertising.

I don't know that there is a cure for the checkbox mentality. I was told a long time ago there is no cure for stupid.

But, it is painful to watch opportunities float past because the folks involved are just logging time between now and when they eventually fold their company.

Wonder where to start with your web design business?

This blog follows along with my efforts to build and grow a website design business, Pro Content and Design.

The goal of this blog is to fill in blanks that may be empty as you get your business rolling.

This blog, particularly the source code section, is not intended for beginners. If you are not comfortable with databases, Ajax, DOM objects and other advanced methods, I strongly suggest you go take a look over at W3 Schools before even reading -- let alone tinkering with -- any of the code here.

I hope this blog has some value to web designers as they attempt to get their businesses going.
